Today was interesting. I was trying to catch up with Dr. Carr the African American Studies professor at Howard... It was crazy. That guy has a train of people following him at all times ;o) Its great. I hope to be like that someday. We will see.
I started out the day mtg with Jennifer Foley who is director Programs at Humanities council of DC... the place I really really want to work at.
There is a program called: Soul of the CIty that greatly intrigues me.
Soul of the city is a Youth Leadership program that is geared towards highschool students. It is set up as a five day ( series) workshop.
I can't wait to see the program in action.
Thursday I get to go with Jeniffer and Mas to a recruiting gig at a highschool.
After that I realized that I could drop in on Dr. Carrs intro class. I am glad I did.
we were discussing this book : Black is a Country
We got on this discussion of what role MLK plays in the narrative specifically to that of the American Dialogue
In many ways they said that MLK is in many ways symbolic of America and black people
Of course every time I hear anyone compartmentalize men such as Martin and others like Malcolm, Huey, etc. I am erked because I feel like we are articulating the "american' narrative. Or rather the "americanized' narrative. When we connect Martin with just black people we strip him of the power he died with. The power that MLK died with. The power that lead him to be assasinated.
MLK became dangerous to America when he started breaking his role as being applicable to only black people. When his story and agenda became broader than just black people.
Is it coincidental that MLK was assasinated when he spoke out against the Vietnam war and began forging a constructive plan in addressing Poverty?
How about Malcolm... how is it that he stayed alive all through out his term with the NOI but once his view became broader and international the story ended? When he left the Nation he in many ways became more 'dangerous'
Huey? He too had a global perspective. His understanding of peace was legit. One of the best I have read probably to date.
I am sure the list goes on and on.
Suffice it to say that the narrative remains the same... hell the characters remain the same. USA is a pretty constant variable.
Interesting that for such a time as the present Iraq looks a lot like Pearl harbor...
All I am saying is nothing is impossible. For all the blind eyes that have been turned... I wouldn't be surprised well you can go where you will with that thought
I went to a presentation where seniors were giving their oral presentations on their practicum intern sites...
This one gentleman did his at the National Archives... there is going to be a follow up on this
He has some VERY interesting insights...
More to come on that
I was catching the bus today when this guy fell straight down out of nowhere... He was walking like normal... we were all waiting for the bus and he fell straight back... It wasn't like a major seizure ...
Luckily there was a nurse there who assisted the gentleman and called an ambulance...
Very unfortunate... the gentleman didn't know when he ate last and it was a very hot day... Many factors could have played into that situation...
The nurse who assisted him did a great job... He works for SOME which is an acronym: So others might eat... it is a place that specifically helps the homeless and poor
I will look up more information about this and get back to you
Tonight I went to OBU ( Organization of Black Unity) class: Religion is it healing or supressing?
Very interesting dialougue...
We specifically talked about the role of Religion in dismembering black leadership... this is where I stepped in
Interestingly enough I have been thinking a lot about this... Leaders are thought to be safe within the constructs of religion... This is not coincidence... Religion is definately playing a role in America.. A very functional role
Well it has been a super busy day...But a great day. I got to think alot which I am always happy about
Peace
